Through the years, this hallowed ground has witnessed the triumphs, camaraderie, and the enduring spirit of golf.
As we approach the centennial celebrations from 23rd to 26th November 2023, it’s fitting to look back at some of the storied trophies and competitions that have left an indelible mark on the history of the club.
Besides the Coronation and Bendor, the following events were played annually;
Bogey Competition (Ladies Open Meeting)
In the early days, the Bogey Competition emerged as a highlight on the Ladies Open Meeting calendar. In 1937, the glittering trophy was generously presented by GAILEY & ROBERTS LTD. This event, steeped in tradition, held a special place in the hearts of the community.
The sponsorship from Gailey & Roberts Ltd not only added prestige but exemplified the power of corporate support in enriching local events and fostering community engagement.
The Ladies Trophy
As the years went by, the Ladies Trophy, a monthly rotational cup, graced the NGC calendar. Presented by the esteemed Frieda Griffins, this event injected variety and spirited competition into the ladies’ golf scene. It was more than a competition; it was a celebration of women’s participation in golf, an arena where skills were honed and camaraderie flourished.
Maryon Cup
In 1956, the club witnessed the inception of the Maryon Cup, introduced by the dedicated past Lady Captain, E. J. Maryon. This cup, a symbol of the club’s commitment to the sport, quickly became a prestigious competition.
It not only encouraged active participation but also enhanced the golfing experience for the esteemed members. The Maryon Cup stands tall as a testament to the club’s unyielding dedication to fostering golf among its members.
The Winnie Maryon Trophy
January 1958 marked a pivotal moment in NGC’s history with the presentation of the Winnie Maryon Trophy by Mrs. E. J. Maryon. Over the years, this trophy has graced the hands of many illustrious winners. Their names have become woven into the fabric of Nakuru Golf Club’s legacy, representing skill, dedication, and the pursuit of excellence.
