Nakuru, a bustling town in Kenya, has witnessed commendable developments since being given a city charter by former President Uhuru Kenyatta who officiated the opening of Nyayo Gardens on December 1st, 2021 after a remarkable facelift. This premier recreational park, which had suffered from years of neglect, underwent a long-awaited transformation under the initiative of the county government of Nakuru. The rejuvenation project aims to restore Nyayo Garden to its former vibrancy and ensure it becomes a peaceful haven for residents and visitors alike.

What has Changed?

  • The Restoration Efforts:

In a significant undertaking, the county government of Nakuru initiated a comprehensive restoration plan for Nyayo Garden. With an allocated budget of 20 million Kenyan shillings, the project encompassed various aspects, including environmental conservation, enhanced amenities, and beautification efforts. The restoration aims to breathe new life into the park and make it an attractive destination for both residents and tourists.

  • Sanitation and Greenery:

The restoration project focused on improving the park’s sanitation infrastructure, ensuring cleanliness and hygiene for all visitors. Additional garbage drop-off points were designated to encourage responsible waste disposal. Furthermore, the county government introduced greening initiatives which included planting more trees and nurturing lush green grass, to create a serene and visually appealing environment. The revitalized Nyayo Garden truly offers a breath of fresh air within the bustling cityscape.

  • Monument and Memorial:

In honor of the late Nobel laureate and environmentalist, Wangari Maathai, Nyayo Garden features a dedicated area known as Wangari Maathai Square. This square houses a magnificent five-meter bronze statue of the esteemed environmentalist, paying tribute to her invaluable contributions. The statue serves as a reminder of her inspiring legacy and the importance of environmental conservation.

  • Enhanced Amenities:

The restoration project aims to improve the visitor experience by introducing various amenities. Water points have also been placed throughout the park, ensuring easy access to clean drinking water. Adequate street lighting has also been set up to enhance safety, allowing visitors to enjoy the park’s offerings even after sunset.
