After three years of intensive renovations, Afraha Stadium, a historic landmark in Nakuru, is set to reopen its doors.
This ambitious upgrade project, which began on April 30, 2021, aims to transform the stadium into a world-class sporting facility.
From Historical Roots to Modern Marvels
Originally built 76 years ago, Afraha Stadium has long been a cornerstone of Nakuru’s sporting heritage. Over the decades, it has hosted countless memorable events, including Robert Kibet’s record-setting 800m run in 1993.
As a testament to its storied past, the stadium’s dusty murram track bore witness to one of the fastest times ever recorded on Kenyan soil.
Today, the renovation project is set to usher in a new chapter for this iconic venue. The stadium’s capacity is being significantly expanded from 8,000 to an impressive 15,000 seat capacity. This increase is designed to accommodate larger audiences and elevate the stadium to international standards.
Major Upgrades and Improvements
The renovation project encompasses several key upgrades:
- Playing Field: The original field is being improved with modern turf to enhance playability.
- Changing Rooms: New, state-of-the-art changing rooms are being constructed to meet international standards.
- Seating and Stands: New stands with canopies will provide better comfort and protection for spectators.
- Athletics Track: A brand-new blue artificial tartan track is being laid, replacing the old murram surface. This new track marks a significant advancement and serves as a focal point of the stadium’s modernization.
In addition to these upgrades, the renovation includes the construction of two pavilions, an underground water tank, an irrigation system, and a power house with a standby generator. The project also involves improvements to the football pitch and sections of the outside perimeter wall.
During the renovation, Nakuru’s sports community was accommodated at alternative venues such as the ASK Showground, Nakuru Athletics Club, and Kabarak University grounds. These temporary solutions ensured that local sporting events continued smoothly while the stadium underwent its transformation.
Looking ahead, the completed stadium will not only boost local sports but also serve as a hub for major events, especially as Kenya prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations with Uganda and Tanzania.
This upgrade positions Afraha Stadium as a critical asset in Kenya’s sporting infrastructure.
Leadership and Vision
The successful progress of the renovation is largely attributed to the visionary leadership of Governor Susan Kihika. When she assumed office in 2022, the stadium was incomplete and underfunded.
Through her efforts and increased resource allocation, significant strides have been made in bringing the project to its current advanced stage.
Jepta Rono, vice-chairperson of the Nakuru City Board, praised the governor’s commitment, highlighting how the new tartan track and other enhancements will offer future athletes a modern facility to build on the legacy of past champions.
The revitalization of Afraha Stadium is more than just an upgrade; it represents a broader vision for Nakuru’s growth. The project is expected to drive economic benefits, enhance sports tourism, and create employment opportunities.
The proximity of Lake Nakuru National Park further adds to the area’s appeal, promising a boost in tourism and hospitality.
As Nakuru eagerly awaits the grand reopening, the revitalized Afraha Stadium stands ready to write the next chapter in its illustrious history, setting a new standard for sporting venues across the region.
