What you need to Know

  • Margaret Kenyatta Mother-Baby Unit handles over a thousand deliveries monthly, highlighting the need for increased support for and other facilities.
  • Nakuru County is reducing maternal and neonatal deaths, addressing hospital congestion, and Governor Susan Kihika’s administration is investing heavily in hospital construction and renovations.

The ongoing improvement of these facilities is expected to reduce infant and maternal mortality rates while making maternity services more affordable.

County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Health, Ms. Roselyn Mungai, emphasized that the upgrades at Bondeni, Mirugi, Rhonda, and Langa Langa Level 3 hospitals are intended to alleviate the pressure on the Margaret Kenyatta Mother-Baby Unit at the Nakuru Teaching and Referral Hospital (NTRH).

Ms. Mungai highlighted that the Margaret Kenyatta Mother-Baby Unit has been handling over a thousand deliveries per month, which underscores the need for more support at other facilities.

She noted that improved services at Bondeni, Mirugi, Rhonda, and Langa Langa hospitals are essential for managing the increasing demand for maternity care.

During a visit to the Accident and Emergency Department at NTRH, Ms. Mungai assured residents of the county’s commitment to reducing delays in urgent and emergency care by enhancing referral systems.

She urged women to utilize available facilities during childbirth to reduce mortality rates, highlighting that these facilities now offer high-quality, safe, and respectful maternal services.

Governor Susan Kihika’s administration is dedicated to investing heavily in the construction and renovation of hospitals to deliver top-tier services.

The county’s goals align with the Global Sustainable Development Goals, Vision 2030, and the County Integrated Development Plan.

Ms. Mungai pointed out that Sustainable Development Goal 3 focuses on ensuring universal access to sexual and reproductive healthcare services, including family planning and education.

The CECM also stressed that the county has made significant progress towards reducing maternal and neonatal deaths. Efforts to decongest the County referral hospital and improve health services are ongoing.

The Mother and Baby Units at the Level 3 hospitals provide comprehensive amenities:

  • Antenatal and postnatal wards
  • Maternity and child health clinics
  • Laboratories
  • Consultation rooms
  • Specialized clinics
  • Delivery rooms
  • Nurse stations
  • Offices
  • Kitchens
  • Laundries

Ms. Mungai stated that as demand for services at NTRH rises, the hospital’s leadership is implementing measures to ensure efficient service delivery.

The County Health Management Team (CHMT) has been established to monitor the performance of all units, ensuring they meet the targets outlined in their performance contracts.
